EDITING

For this picture page, I chose to use four images from the Spruce Creek, FL weightlifting competition. I chose these particular images because they offer insight into the emotions associated with the sport in general and with this team, in particular. The photos tell the story of strength, perseverance, and victory. I chose, as the headlining image, the photo of a girl lifting weights because it showcases the main action of the sport. But I also wanted to depict the emotional nature that is encapsulated within this competition, so I chose to use the image of joy on one of the weightlifter’s faces and also chose the image of the excitement and support coming from the crowd, cheering the girls on. These are strong, young women who never give up and have achieved so much already. I chose this headline because it is the team’s motto and it accurately represents the girls’ resilience. With regards to the layout, I used a spatial and detached layout because I wanted each photo to speak for itself, while still belonging to a common theme. The layout depicts a variety of photos, not laying right on top of each other, giving the reader the opportunity to examine each image individually. The layout also provides ample room for the story.
For this front-page layout, I chose a photo of one of the competitors in the women’s weightlifting competition, moments after she broke one of her own personal best records benching pressing 250 pounds. I chose this photo because it represents women’s weightlifting, a nonconventional sport for women. The image projects the idea that women can be strong and they can be tough. The photo breaks the “feminine” stereotype that all females should fit into. I chose to arrange the layout this way so that the character is facing the center of the page. In addition, I think the heading and the deck flow nicely into the story and the photo fits well with several other stories on the page.

For this social media platform, I wanted to use a photo that accurately expressed the emotion of what it feels like to win the World Series. I also chose to use this image because it is eye-catching and would attract the attention of someone scrolling through his or her feed. In addition, while the photo’s main focus is the two teammates hugging, the image also captures the stadium lights, the crowd and fellow teammates. This photo provides the “bigger picture” of the story.

For this World Series slideshow, I used photos that captured various aspects of the final game of the series, Game 6. As is with most sporting events, there is an anticipation that occurs when two teams face off. I wanted to depict the game in a realistic way, so I laid out the slides in chronological order in order to capture the authenticity of the game and the emotions that continued to build as the game proceeded. The slideshow begins with photos of the game being played on the field. The images depict both teams throughout much of the slideshow, and also highlight some big moments and action photos from the game, but eventually the layout moves towards the LA Dodgers winning the game. As is in keeping with the chronological order of any competition, at the end there is a winner and a loser. I wanted to show the differences between the two teams’ reactions when the game was over, but focused mainly on the reaction of the winning team, as is the realistic way that sports are covered. In laying out photos of the LA Dodgers, I moved from the team’s reaction to winning, to holding the trophy to sharing their joy with their families, and finally posing as team champions.

For this election slideshow, I chose to use photos that offered a great deal of variety. I wanted to depict the many different events that took place on Election Day. I began the layout with the depiction of the actual process of voting because this is where the story of any election day begins. But the slideshow quickly departs from chronological order, as I also include in the beginning an image of the counting of ballots. While vote counting would normally be the conclusion of any election day and the natural ending to the story, the layout for the slideshow embodies the “so much more” that happened this election day. The photos I chose for the slideshow depict many things from that day, from both sides of the Presidential election, with both Trump’s and Biden’s activities on November 3rd, to protestors marching for voting rights, to police officers in the street near the White House, to people boarding up stores, to so many other photos depicting the unusual activities that took place. I chose this layout for the slideshow because I wanted to depict the normal beginning and ending of an election day, but also wanted to show how much emotion and passion there was on both sides of the political spectrum.
